Dear Mr. Novelli:
News reports this week are a powerful reminder about how the AARP is in the trenches—in this instance the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals—fighting for the rights of older Americans. On behalf of the National Retiree Legislative Network’s some 2 million members, I want to commend the AARP for its dedication to challenging in the courts the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s rule that would allow employers to cut off health care benefits for retirees age 65 and older who are eligible for Medicare.
It is preposterous that the federal agency that was created to prevent discrimination would claim that it is in the public interest to allow businesses to reduce or eliminate health care benefits on the basis of age. I applaud the dedication of the AARP Board Members and your legal team’s tenacity for combating the EEOC’s rule in order to protect your members and all retirees from losing their rights under the age discrimination laws.
I hope the judges see the wisdom in the AARP’s arguments.
A. J. (Jim) Norby,
President, National Retiree Legislative Network
